Facts About School Safety:

Unintentional Injuries

3.5 million “unintentional injuries” to children happen in and around schools annually. It is highly likely that any given child is at significant risk of being injured at school at least once every four years.

School Buses

While school buses are one of the safest ways to travel, an estimated 5,000 children are injured each year in school bus-related accidents. From 2003-2012, 174 school-age childeren died in school transportation-related crashes; 55 were getting on or off the bus.


Playground injuries are the most common school-related injury among children ages 5–14; around 80% of the most severe injuries are falls.

High School Athletics

High school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits, and 30,000 hospitalizations each year.


28% of students in grades 6-12 have been the victim of bullying, which includes 20% of students in high school.


In 2012, there were approximately 749,200 nonfatal violent victimizations at school, amongst students 12-18 years of age.

Science Labs

The rate of science lab accidents at schools and colleges is up to 100 times that in the chemical industry.
